After designing & installing several BCI Burke pocket parks
for the Township of Jefferson, I was asked to provide a “state
of the art” playground that was totally “inclusive”
to children of all abilities—concentrating on the wheelchair
bound child. After many design modifications, with the help of
Grace Rhinesmith, the town’s Recreation Director, Ben Shaffer
& Associates VP George Herberger & Grace Rhinesmith presented
the idea & design to the Town Council who unanimously approved
the project.
Camp Jefferson is a 97-acre site that was formerly owned by The
Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, NJ and was purchased by the
township using Green Acres funding in 1999. Numerous renovations
have since taken place at the facility and this playground is
yet another wonderful addition to the site. This project was funded
by the town’s Recreation Trust Fund which is a “dedicated
tax fund” paid for by taxpayers dollars. The children of
Jefferson & the surrounding area are just having a BLAST playing
on this new inclusive playground.
